Happy New Year 2008

Happy New Year!

We all hung out in downtown Austin at First Night, watching great parade.  (Isn't that like giving good face, watching good parade?)  Drank fresh spumanti with my parents, coined a new term (prosperis) which means excessive wine intake/excessive $$ earnings, I guess.

What will 2008 bring?  To ask my dogs it will bring fresh soup bones and fudge.  To ask me, it will bring a completed novel, an MBA program, a fountain of white wine sprung forth from the backyard, and a second kiddo.  Not as good as fudge but it'll do.

Happy 08,

z

Hayride!

This is Marcel at the neighborhood hayride last night. Zack threw hay at Marcel while I was taking his picture.

We are getting in the Christmas spirit around here! Marcel is off from school for the rest of the year and is ready for Santa to come. We just emailed Santa a letter to let him know:

I like you Santa Claus. I hope you fly well with your reindeer. I hope a lot of boys and girls have been very good all year. Have a good Christmas and a Happy New Year. And I hope your elves are making great toys.

We got the Sufjan Stevens Christmas 5 CD set. Marcel was so excited to get it that he went into the bedroom with the songbook and listened to all of the songs. Big Sufjan Stevens fan. His favorite song right now- "Put the Lights on the Tree" - click here to watch the video at YouTube.

Did I mention that the CD it also came with cute little Christmas stickers?

Today I decided to make ol' skeletor some holiday accesories- he needed to be a bit more festive for the Christmas Season, don't you think?

Happy Birthday Zack!

Cropcke

Brandi, check my cake skills! Ha! The cake says "Dude, you are OLD! Papa Poop Sack". Papa Poop Sack Zack is the name that we call Zack when he starts to act old man-ish...like when Marcel and I are laughing and dancing in the living room and he says "Keep it down, you guys are so LOUD". It is his curmudgeon side. Papa Poop Sack is also what we call Zack when he does other old man things like FALL ASLEEP ON THE SHUTTLE TO ACL FESTIVAL. Oh, and then he fell asleep again at the festival during Aimee Mann. And no, he wasn't drinking.

So, we celebrated Zack's birthday all weekend. Marcel and I got him the new Scissor Sisters CD and a skydiving lesson. We went out to dinner last night and then saw Jackass (just Zack and I, not Marcel!). I didn't want to see it, but since it was his birthday I didn't make him go alone. It was actually funny.

Today we had a birthday dinner at home. Zack's requested brie, crusty bread and a chicken Caesar salad. I found an awesome recipe for baked brie and it ROCKED! I'll post the recipe below if you want to give it a try, just know that if you come to our house for dinner I'll probably be serving it.

Wheel of Brie (I got a Mini)

Apricot Preserves

Curry

Cashews

Sprinkle the wheel of brie with curry powder, rub the curry powder into the rind (it looked light yellow when I was done, I didn't use a lot). Spread a generous amount of preserves on top of the brie and then top with a handful of chopped cashews. Bake at 350 until the nuts are golden and the cheese inside the rind is melted, about 15-20 minutes. Serve with slices of baguette or crackers.

Yum yum.

Happy Birthday to Zack!

Easter Brinner

Nothing say Easter Breakfast like...spaghetti!Brinner

Last week I asked both Zack and Mar to give me some ideas for Easter Brunch. Since it will be the first holiday at our new home, I was planning to do a nice brunch at the house, instead of going to one of the many Easter brunches offered around town. Start making memories in this house!

Marcel asked what "brunch" was, and I explained the combination of Breakfast and lunch...to which he replied- "well, then can we have Brinner, Breakfast and Dinner?" Spaghetti was the choice.

So last night I make up the ingredients for Spaghetti and meat sauce, but layered it to make it more like a breakfast "casserole".  Marcel woke up at 6:30 to check out the Easter bunny's offerings and the casserole went into the oven. A half hour later we were dining on Brinner, complete with buttered dinner rolls. Marcel was thrilled that his fantastic idea was made a reality.

Yes, there is a new tradition in our family. If you visit us on Easter, expect me to serve up a spaghetti casserole and coffee when you roll out of bed.

Black eyed peas

Yes, we ate some for good luck.

Yes, Marcel WAS singing "my lovely lady lumps" as we ate them.  :(

Beye

Last night we went to the First Night festival in downtown Austin.  Take a look at our photo album.  There were fire jugglers (which I'm totally gonna do this year), a theremin robot band, a Segway ballet, a snow machine, fireworks (despite the burn ban) -- a huge Luke Savisky art film projected on the side of a Radisson, and mountain climbers dressed in biz suits rappelled the building again and again.  Bollywood singers and dancers, this guy with his hand covered in glow in the dark paint who must have been on crazy acid, a drum circle of women (the same lady who sold me Jen's Christmas drum [and I'm not sure if I'm supposed to mention the Christmas drum but I just did so she's been officially outed as a drummer]), a lady in a billygoat outfit with huge horns who appearded out of NOWHERE and did this crazy dance for us all at the drum show.  A group of people who dressed as ants, driving ant cars.  Santa on stilts.  African drummers.  A mob of people holding loaves of bread, led by a woman carrying a banner that said "BREAD".  This is why we live in Austin.  This is why we put up with the skank traffic, the overpriced housing market, our ghetto HEB.  For stuff like this.  Yay 2006!

And then we came home and turned on Dick Clark and he's had a stroke and was very hard to understand?!  It was depressing and surreal.  My first time to see a TV show hosted by someone who's had a stroke.  More power to him.

Merry Christmas!

SnowdudezSnowboyz

Marcel woke us up at 7:30 this morning, running so fast into our bedroom that if this were a cartoon he surely would've run straight through the wall.  SANTA CAME!! SANTA CAME!!

Santa found Marcel in Syracuse.  More Christmas pictures to come --

Here's some pictures of our snowman, aptly named Frosty by Marcel.  He lost a bunch of raisin teeth real soon after we made him so he looked a little on the Billy Bob side.

And here's Marcel showing off his new GameBoy Games. Gameboy_1 It's 10am here and the GameBoy's already plugged in, on recharge.  He's worn out the battery.  Mar made me a picture of Beef and Cheese for Christmas! It rules.

Christmas Music -- Last Jam of the Season

Okay, we're wrapping up the month of Christmas jams with a weird one, Christmas Island.  I don't know who sings it -- a Google search shows a lot of Jimmy Buffet links but this can't be Jimmy Buffet.

Anyway, please enjoy, and thanks for listening to all my Christmas tunes!

Mo' Xmas Music

Scrooges_1 This Christmas jam is going out to my sister.  We grew up watching the very best version of Christmas Carol ever -- the musical Scrooge, starring Albert Finney.  This one's the best.  Hell, it's better than the BOOK.

We watched this movie every year.  We know all the words, scrutinized every detail of the set, Finney's facial expressions.  Albert Finney is Christmas to me -- especially the scene in the end where -- ach!  I can't give away Scrooge SPOILERS!  Ahhh crap.  If you've seen the movie leave a comment and we can talk abot how it's the very best ever.

Here's "I Hate People".

Deanmartinxmasthumb This is a cute and kinda patiently bouncy jam by Dean Martin.  It's called Marshmallow World.  You'll dig it more than you think you will.

To date I can't recall seeing this in any movies, but I think it would make an excellent soundtrack addition.  Anybody remember this in any movies by chance?

Mo' Xmas Music

Newsdenverxmas Tonight I'm posting a couple of my wife's favorite childhood Christmas songs.  Every year we listen to these songs over cocoa and she starts telling stories about the girls she grew up with, telling stories about when they were all little kids.

A couple of true classics for us Gen X-ers.  From John Denver & The Muppets "A Christmas Together."

I have to offset the worst Christmas song of all time with the very BEST Christmas song ever.  The Pogues, Fairytale of New York.  Most of you probably know it but for those who don't, please enjoy.  This is a wonderful song, filled with such character and heart.  One of the best songs ever, in fact.

Mo' Xmas Music

I'm very sorry to do this to you.  This is the WORST Christmas song in the world.  Of all time.  Every year Jennifer and Marcel live to torture me with this song.  They start talking about it right around Thanksgiving, just when I'm planning on pulling out the Christmas CDs again.  I hate this song.  They of course love it.

It's called Xmas at K-Mart, by some jackass named Root Boy Slim.  It's a total joke, it's gotta be.  Why can't we listen to the Horatio Sands Christmas song instead?  Nope.  Every year, it's "Play Xmas at K-Mart!".  I hope Root Boy Slim gets hella coal in his stocking.

Around the Town (Lake)

Img_2482After filling up on a Father's Day brunch of Krispy Kreme, Mashed Potato Frittata, and fruit,  we headed to the rowing dock to do a bit of kayaking. We rented a 3 person kayak, Marcel donned his life jacket, and we were off.  Also taking place at the rowing dock was the Urban Assault challenge. It appeared that the teams had to navigate a blow up dinosaur around a small portion of Town Lake before biking to their next checkpoint.  Looked like fun--- kinda...

Marcel was given his own oar, and was not interested in using it to assist us in our forward motion- no, he used it to turn the boat in the direction of the shore and other kayakers. I think I got a double workout, just trying keep the boat straight against his opposite paddling technique. He also used the oar to flip water all over us, so that when we returned the kayak back to the dock, we were the only soaking wet people stepping out of kayaks. Everyone else was as dry as a bone. But I bet we had more fun!

We got back to the house, changed, and had some margaritas!

I think Zack really enjoyed his Father's Day adventure... More pictures can be found here.

Project for Dad

Img_2454Friday night Marcel and I headed down to the Greenbelt to take some photos for Zack's Father's Day gift. Every year, Marcel and I put together some sort of framed gift (of Marcel's choice) for Zack; framed hand prints, art, or photos. This year, we decided to take pictures of Marcel out in "nature" at the Greenbelt and make a action collage.

We got to the Greenbelt and found that it was completely dry. Img_2464 I heard that it was drying up, but didn't know that it was dry already. I've never seen it like that before- it was bizarre to think that just a few months ago the water was deep enough to swim in. My plan to take pictures Marcel sitting in a mini waterfall - foiled! Bummer. But, we found a lot of great places to take photos, including some graffiti under the overpass.Img_2461Img_2443

We put the photos in one of those collage frames with 8 picture slots. Looks pretty darn good, if I say so myself. In addition, we got Zack a Good Luck money candle, and we are going to take him out on the town today (i.e. kayaking around Town Lake) and then to lunch somewhere yummy.

Happy Memorial Day!

Happy Memorial Day from us all here.  This has been a textbook holiday for us, super fun from the getgo.

The Capital of Texas Triathlon was today, and as Marcel and I have a contest going to see which one of us will do a tri first we were both amped to watch it.  Plus the weather was mellow and even a tad chilly at certain moments, rare but wonderful as last year's Memorial Day was lavariffic.

Jen went on a very nice long run, and the three of us met up downtown at the heart of the triathlon.  There were THOUSANDS of people there, volunteers, athlete's families, locals like us, and of course the awesome athletes.  The CapTexTri is very spectator friendly, with both transitions in the same spot, and those are a stone's throw from the finish  (the transitions are where the athletes go from swim-to bike, then bike-to-run, T1 and T2 respectively) -- so spectators can post up and watch the whole thing from a few prime spots in the park.

Everyone who did the CapTexTri ROCKED today.  I gotta say it.  It was so motivating.  This being Austin, the mayor jogged past us at one point, all geared out in nice trail shoes.  I'm way fired up to do this tri.  As soon as Jen found us she got the earful from me about how I want to speed up my ankle surgery schedule so I can begin training again and just get back out there doing SOMETHING, I don't want to waste any time so let's get it over with.  I suppose being aggro and insane while injured is better than being bummed out and pissed, but either way the spouse gets an earful.  :)  My doctor's just too conservative.  I'm ready for surgery; cut me, clean me, let me heal, then get the hell out of my way.

Then we all came home and fired up the grill for the first time of the year.  Marcel burned his fingers on the grill lid, touching it to see what it felt like -- this is a Memorial Day rite of passage in itself, right?  Jennifer made us REAL key lime pie and it was so good it drove our son mad with glee and he put the whole piece in his mouth at once.  Our burgers were yum, fruit salad yum, the whole damn thing is yum as yum can be.  Our naps were yum too.

Big_fundamental The only thing that could cap this day (other than the frozen margaritas I'm about 30 minutes away from making) will be watching the Big Fundamental whup that Phoenix ass for 48 minutes tonight.  I'll be wearing my Obi-Wan Ginobli shirt and Mar and I'll be yelling at the TV all night.  Casa de Spurs up in here.  Ever the contrarian Jen wants the Suns to win, but even SHE will tell you that when push comes to shove Popovich is a very handsome man.

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY TO ALL YOU DUDES.  Enjoy your families!

Thanks Mom

Happy Mother's Day Mom! Thanks for everything! Thanks for cleaning up my closet when I had left all of that rotten broccoli in it. Thanks for returning all of those library books and paying the fines for me, time and time again. Thanks for doing all of my laundry until I was like 2o years old. Thanks (both of you) for paying for my college even though I seriously screwed up. Thanks for not killing me when I got my first tattoo (or second, or third...) Oh, and thanks for not killing me when I came to visit from Texas with that new arm band tattoo (fourth tattoo) when I was in that wedding and it totally showed. Thanks for helping me move to Texas, even though I know you were going to miss me. Thanks for understanding that I was going to stay when things didn't work out here for me at first. Thanks for threatening to crash our wedding if we eloped, and persuading us to invite people, it was awesome to have family and friends in Vegas. Thanks for listening to me freak out about my pregnancy. Thanks for being here to teach me how to feed and bathe my child. Thanks for helping me to calm down when I was wailing on the phone that we were going to be homeless after September 11th. Thanks for sending candy! Thanks for teaching me how to cook. Thanks for teaching me how to be a good Mom. Thank you for always accepting me for who I am, though you may not always agree with my decisions.  I am very lucky to have you as my Mom. I love you. Birthday Surprise

After Kung Fu today, I was sent away for a bit while the guys got a little birthday surprise ready for me.  I arrived at our place to find the house dark and the kitchen lit up by birthday candles atop a super yummy raspberry filled cake.  You never know what to expect around here!

Marcel had signed the card in his usual way- Moo.  And if that wasn't awesome enough, I got a gift certificate for a sports massage also. My my family rocks. Dorkcandles

Marshmallow Eyes

Another day off today for Good Friday!

The day started off a bit differently than I had planned. I woke up feeling groggy and bizarre. My eyes did not feel like they were opening all of the way, and when I looked in the mirror I saw that they were all swollen and puffy. I had bags under my eyes that would rival Philip Baker Hall's eye-bags.  Didn't take me long to figure out what was up- I was having an allergic reaction to the antibiotic that I am taking for my sinus infection.  Poo. This happened last time with a different antibiotic! Two Benadryls later, I am back to normal, but feeling a bit loopy. I am glad it wasn't too bad, last time I had a reaction to my antibiotic I ended up in the ER.

So Mar and I have a few things planned today; watch Two Brothers (again) and make tie dyes.  Actually, Marcel has been calling it "tie dead" instead. So we will be making tie deads this afternoon after we score some rubber bands.

Marcel created a special holiday message - check it out here: Download happy_easter.AVI

On a side-note, right now Pam Reed should be in the beginning stages of her 300 mile run planned for this weekend.  I am hoping there will be some Internet updates throughout the weekend- I will be looking for reports and post them if I find any. There is definitely some controversy about this run as well as Dean Karnazes 300 mile run- but whether or not they make "ultra history", I am very interested to see how it all turns out. There will be a story on the "rival" ultrarunners (they  have competed against each other at Badwater) this Sunday on 60 minutes.
